For learning Spanish, French, Italian, or Chinese as a Second language online, the website at Yabla.com offers its own variety of language program videos and activities. Here is a review of Yabla language learning software and their online language learning facilities.

Yabla is the most loved free online language learning courses for foreign language beginners!

Yabla Introduction

Are you studying a foreign language like Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese or English as a second language? Do you have access to native speakers for listening comprehension and speaking / pronunciation practice? If you are studying one of these foreign languages but don’t have extensive access to native speakers for development of your language skills, then the Yabla Language Immersion website may just be for you.

Yabla is “language immersion through online video” and probably the most useful language website I’ve used so far. The videos come from a variety of sources, whether they are news reports, interviews, or just random scenes filmed in the country to illustrate authentic use of the language. Subtitles and translations appear under the video, which you can turn off if you’d like, and clicking on a word will search for its definition in the dictionary pane to the right.  You can also slow down the play back so the speech is slower, or put it on a loop to repeat a certain word or phrase.  Then you can choose the play game button to start the listening/cloze exercise and type in the missing word.

Yabla offers free online language learning videos and demos which is encouraging to potential subscribers. You have more than an ample opportunity to “prove” the Yabla subscription language learning website before laying out any of your hard-earned pesos, francs, euros or other cash currency. Their videos offer some distinctive features important to foreign language learners which include:

  • A slow-play feature to aid in listening comprehension
  • A repeat feature allowing stopping and repeating of a phrase or segment multiple times to increase comprehension and mimicking practice
  • Short videos focused on a single theme or element. effectively isolating language learning themes
  • Five levels of videos and interactive lessons ranging from easy to difficult

Currently, They’ve just added a new flashcards feature, and the Spanish & French sites also have blogs of language lessons on grammar and vocabulary. All of the languages have hundreds of videos available, and the French site does have some Quebecois videos as well.

Monthly subscriptions are $9.95 a month per course, with discounts for 6 or 12 month subscriptions ($54.95 or $99.95) with a 7 day money-back guarantee.  For schools, institutes and other group pricing, the cost per year varies based on the number of users, from one up to one thousand for each language.

You can download many of the videos through the website or iTunes as well to take with you instead of watching them all online.

Spanish on Yabla

According to the Yabla website, videos are culled from “contemporary television, film and music”, with the videos intended for native speakers and made by native speakers. Yabla website videos also feature native speakers from different countries to provide listening comprehension access to a variety of accents and pronunciation. In the Spanish section videos website area called “LoMasTv.com”, for example, free video demo and paid program speakers are from Argentina, Peru, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Chile, Honduras, Uruguay and Colombia. There are also some fun listening games in both French and Spanish. There is a section with Spanish for K to 12 Learners with materials and videos suited for young learners.

French on Yabla

For online French video immersion at the French.Yabla website, visit their “French for All” section, which features “authentic” French Video for adult learners, educators, and students using contemporary French TV, music, film, travel” and exclusive Yabla-prepared content. As with Spanish, there are free video demos and paid program speakers, but principally with Parisian and other regional French accents.

Chinese on Yabla

The newest chinese learning program of Yabla including 126 videos, Chinese Flashcard Vocabulary Game &  Chinese English Pinyin Dictionary.
When learning a new language, one of the biggest challenges is to stay engaged. Yabla Chinese provides a wide variety of entertaining programming, including music, drama, interviews, and travel, that will make you look forward to studying. Fresh programming is added monthly. Learning a language is a bit like going to the gym. If it were universally fun, everyone would be in shape. We believe language learning shouldn’t be a chore.
Numerous studies done on language retention all point to the fact that the best way to learn is to become immersed in the language. Becoming versed in reading and writing is a good place to start, but you must also listen to native speakers. Most people don’t have direct access to Chinese-speaking populations. Watching Yabla Chinese provides this access in an environment where you have full control.

From what I’ve seen on Yabla, I highly recommend this resource. It is really unique from other online learning resources in several ways:

  • The vast variety of authentic videos.
  • Videos for all levels of German.
  • Fabulous video viewing and learning features.
  • Plenty of music videos to chose from – great for high school students who want to learn more about what’s trendy and hip in today’s German music scene.
  • Reasonable prices.

Nothing is perfect, so yes, here are a few things that I find are missing in Yabla:

  • More rudimentary beginner videos are needed.
  • Yabla.com is geared more towards learners from high school and up. I think more German cartoons would make a welcome addition for younger learners.
  • Some music videos have mature content matter, which may not be suitable in certain classrooms. However, yabla.com states that they can streamline your subscription account to omit these types of videos.

Linguaphone Review

Advantages of Linguaphone Language Courses

1. Linguaphone offers courses that teach you to read, write and speak the language.
2. Many of the Linguaphone courses have very nice manuals with beautiful pictures and the dialog of what you are going over in a lesson.
3. Linguaphone has some courses that are all audio so you can learn on the move.
4. Linguaphone courses are based on: listen, understand and speak. This method has been used for over 100 years.
5. Many people rate Linguaphone very high on their list of language courses.

Disadvantages of Linguaphone Language Courses

1. If you don’t have a basic knowledge of the language you are learning, Linguaphone courses can be somewhat difficult because it moves along too fast, without enough repetition.
2. On some of the Linguaphone audio you will need to listen very carefully.
3. You may want to go over another language course series, like Pimsleur, and use Linguaphone to expand your language skills, vocabulary and listening comprehension.
4. Linguaphone prices range from inexpensive to expensive depending on the course.

Linguaphone is over a hundred years old and one of the original language courses available. This made me a little nervous about reviewing it as I certainly didn’t want to do it a disservice but I also wanted to be as honest as possible. I have used Linguaphone before when I was about 18: it was the complete French course and I remember being extremely daunted by all the material and use of the foreign language. I was interested to see how the allTalk product would do.

To begin with I liked the scenario idea of the young lady on a trip to Italy and the whole course being based around her introduction to the Italian Language. She begins speaking English and slowly starts to speak in Italian as Lorenzo teachers her new vocabulary and sentences. The acting is well done and the Italian clear and easy to hear.

The main introduction of the vocabulary is in the lessons after the initial conversation is heard; the narrator gives the words as a list with the Italian and the English and then a gap. There is an awful lot of vocabulary here. If learning as much vocabulary as you can is your goal then this is ideal for you as they throw list upon list at you and then test them with practice lessons. It is very difficult to learn and remember all the vocab given, and reviews of previous lessons are essential. The method of delivery of the vocabulary reminds me of receiving vocab lists at school, and although the practice lessons are more original and effective than I remember them being at school, the method is possibly not the most efficient at helping students remember quickly.

The grammar is covered occasionally in the lessons with passing comments about important points, or the verb boxes which show full conjugation of verbs. This is adequate for a beginners understanding of the structure and grammar of the language, although as the amount of vocabulary learned is so high I would have thought more grammar would have been included. The book included covers a little grammar but is mostly just a dictionary of the vocabulary covered in the course.

Cost and Value

£237.91 is not a cheap price for linguaphone complete. In my opinion, Pimsleur Approach or Rocket Languages will be better in Cost & Value.

Linguaphone has 15 language courses. (Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish)

Most people’s ratings of Linguaphone are positive. It covers all language core skills, oral, aural, writing and reading. Linguaphone courses are very thorough courses. People who like written transcripts of the dialog will like Linguaphone. The narrators on the Linguaphone courses are British speakers.

Natively German Review

Natively German teaches you by using real world situations, pictures, text as well as voices to bring the content to life for you. Which is why overall it is so effective, as the method they use is so immersive you start to feel a little like you are really in Germany speaking with native speakers. Which is great for building up your confidence, and is more fun as well. Because which would you rather do, sit and read static lessons or learn in an immersive environment by speaking and interacting?

Natively Germans “immediate response” method gives you instant feedback. Which provides you with an interesting and engaging experience as well as making it challenging enough that you wont be bored after a few lessons. And the content is all self paced, which is nice since most of us do not have the time for structured classes.

So lets take a look at why we rated this product so highly. Using the metrics you saw in the beginning of this review.

  • Features: The Natively German program consists of four material packed CD’s, ‘Talk Now’ which is geared towards the beginner. ‘Talk More’ Which takes you that next step from beginner to an intermediate level. ‘World Talk’ This is where things start to get more advanced, and contains interactive games and quizzes. And finally ‘Talk the Talk’ which will teach you useful words and phrases using everything else you have already learned in the first three. All told there is more then 200 hours of learning material here. Which is why it scored 5 out of 5.
  • Fundamentals: Natively German builds a very solid fundamental base, with as mentioned the entire first CD being geared towards the very basics. And it will provide you with a great vocabulary, especially if you are intending to travel to a German speaking area sometime in the near future you can pick up most of the basics you will need fairly quickly.
  • Simplicity: The only reason Natively German loses half a point for simplicity is also why it gets high marks elsewhere. It is a learn at your own pace program, which can be more difficult for some people. But the whole interface and program is laid out in an intuitive and simple way that you will easily understand.
  • Teaching Method: The teaching method is great, there is a wealth of material laid out for you to use. And since it is learn at your own pace you can redo any lessons you feel you need to, which can be beneficial for the more advanced lessons.
  • Tools There’s a bunch of great tools in this program, with games, activity’s, printable dictionaries, the ability to record your own voice to listen to later and check your progress. Natively German packs in a ton of tools into the four CD’s which will no doubt help you learn in a fast but also fun way.

Overall, Natively German is a great product. And while it did not make it to number one on our list it is a solid value for the money. They dont offer everything in one package quite like Rocket German, so if you really want to learn buy the full version the first time around rather then buying anything else. And keep in mind that any version of this program contains a free Headset and Microphone, so if you do not already have either you will not need to make the additional investment.

Natively French Review

One of the best features of  Natively French is the versatility. It presents topics in a number of ways that make it easy to use and understand. The program is also extremely interactive to the extent that you can choose what you want to learn and when you want to learn it. It’s different from other language learning programs that employ a step by step formula. With this program you can start at any point in the program and have fun while you learn the French language.

Natively French Language Course is an effective French language teaching tool that includes various activities, interactive games and quizzes that make learning enjoyable and easy. One of the biggest problems you need to overcome when learning a language is trying to stay motivated. This software employs specially designed interactive games and teaching techniques, especially in speech recognition, to keep you motivated to master the French language. The program has exclusive games that require you to use the French language to solve them. These games are a fun way to end your daily French learning experience and also serve as great practice tools.

Natively French also has an excellent progress tracking feature that will let you know which subjects you excel and which ones you need improvements. Another feature that I liked about the software and which ultimately led me to choose this above other French language learning programs is the voice recognition system, which I found extremely useful. The voice recognition system records your voice and plays it back for you so you can compare the way you enunciate the words to the native French speaker in the program. It’s a great tool that enhances French accent and pronunciation.

The course uses a lot of images, video and audio in teaching and Native French speakers there to instruct you through the steps in both French and English. The software has all the features that make it conducive to any style of learning. An added convenient feature of this system is the bonus audio disk that you could use to easily transfer audio files to your iPod or other MP3 player so you could learn the French language on the go.

Although the system comes with interactive games and quizzes, an online test is lacking. There is no online chat with native French speakers as well. Also, I had a hard time looking for any complete help section in their website, perhaps this is still under development. Another thing I noticed is in the way Natively French Complete Language Course presents material in that they don’t thoroughly provide a description of sentence structure. For instance, you could learn to say certain phrases but you are not sure how a sentence came together.

Natively English Review

Natively English is easy to use interactive English language learning software that provides effective solutions for individuals, from beginner to advance. It helped me improve and build up my vocabulary and pronunciation fast and I have fun while learning. It is great value for your money with features that can be found in more expensive products. Having more than 30 years experience in making language software and trusted by millions of users worldwide, the makers of this program have come up with one of the best if not the best software in its class.

Natively Japanese Review

The Natively Japanese is an advanced and highly effective way to learn the Japanese language. It has most of the features of the more expensive products at the fraction of the cost, which is something that is hard to beat. I was really impressed by the program’s numerous features and teaching tools, which in some cases are not as comprehensive as similar features in more expensive alternatives but are nonetheless sufficient. I was also impressed by the programs simplicity and its user friendly user interface that minimized the need for tedious tutorials, manuals and technical support.

Natively Chinese Review

Natively Chinese is the fastest and most intuitive way to confidently learn Mandarin Chinese. However, for me the greatest benefit I got from this program is helping me learn many words and characters. With over 4,000 colorful and entertaining illustrations and pictures accompanied by native speaker audio, there is almost no dull moment. The dictionary part is awesome where you will see how the words are written in Chinese characters. All the different methods employed really helps to retain information. It is ideal for home or family, school or educational, business or travel purposes.
