Disadvantages

• The course doesn’t teach you any grammar explicitly. This is not at all bad. How much English grammar do you know anyway?
• Many reviews complain about the fact that with Pimsleur you will learn only about 500 words of the chosen language. This is true, but learning a lot of words is not the point of the Pimsleur approach, learning to speak is!
• Speaking french in 10 days, really? I think you should be understand like this: 10 days = 240 hours, you spend half hours every day, and then 580 days later, you can speaking french fluently.

Pimsleur Approach VS. Rosetta Stone

Pimsleur courses are based on listening only. This means you can learn a language anywhere – in your car, on the bus, in the waiting room of your dentist or while you are doing your housework. This approach can be quite effective because it tap into the potential of your subconscious mind.

Pimsleur is that there is no written version, so you need to have a basic understanding of the spelling of the words. At least Italian is phonetic — easier in that regard than French.

Pimsleur Approach is great because you can take anywhere. Very fast at getting you to a conversational level.

Transparent claims that if you learn with their software, you will never forget what you’ve learned.  It takes a while to complete each lesson, but once you finish it, you have done, all using different games and activities that keep you from getting bored. Also, their learning process is great. I loved learning vocabulary with the Byki Deluxe. And when I was finished with it, I was well prepared to jump into the main software.

Finally, I love their online community, where you can share your custom vocabulary lists, as well as download lists make by others–this keeps your software valuable even after you’ve learned everything in it.

Ease of Use

The design of Fluenz was based on three principles: the belief that great teachers significantly improve student success when learning a second language; that using English to help you learn a new language can significantly improve comprehension speed and focusing on relevant vocabulary and conversational structure is not only the best, but also the most practical way to learn a new language.

Overall, Fluenz does deliver on its core beliefs. The software is very well designed and easy to use, being geared towards English speaking teens and adults. Most software, such as Rosetta Stone, teach through methods that are easy to understand for children through association and ‘feel’, but Fluenz relies heavily on using English as a basis of explanation for how Italian works, making it far easier to comprehend for older students. However, it wouldn’t be suitable for younger children.

Effectiveness

The Fluenz Italian courses are possibly some of the most effective Italian learning systems ever made for adults. The whole idea was designed with adults in mind and concentrates on teaching the vocabulary that is the most quickly useable for the majority of people in everyday life. This is one of the benefits of FLuenz over some of its language software rivals: it does not try and teach you as a child and force you to learn vocabulary that is not immediately useful.

It teaches you relevant language from the beginning and teaches it in such a way that makes it not easily forgettable. The use of video and the enigmatic Sonia Gil is another boon for the users of this software as it allowas a connection to be made, not unlike a teacher-student connection in the classroom, and the way the vocabulary is broken down makes it easy not only to learn the words, but to understand the structure of sentences within the target language.

When compared to its nearest rivals, Fluenz possibly does not teach as much vocabulary throughout its entire course, but it is taught in a more mature fashion. Students will realise they are learning from day one, whereas some courses can often leave students hanging for weeks until they realise they have learned something constructive, often because of the childlike method of association that they employ.

The exercises that Fluenz includes are also top-notch: They build the different skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and although it does not include voice recognition software, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent line-up and is barely missed at all. There is a voice recorder after all, and most people will easily tell if their pronunciation is good or awful when played next to the native speaker.

The one small gripe I would have with this software (and I assure you it is small) is that Sonia Gil is not a native speaker of the language. Although she is obviously very adept at speaking the languages that she is teaching, it would possibly have made more sense to use a native speaker of the language for authenticity. That said, the people involved in the conversations (some native speakers, some not?) all seem to have excellent pronunciations and accents and I am sure the fact that they are not native will not harm anyone’s chances of learning the language. Overall, Sonia Gil is an excellent choice for the presenter and she has the right amounts of charisma and authority to be believable as our teacher.

I have been using this TeLL me More Italian for a few weeks now and am really enjoying the product. I have found it easy to navigate around the program (read the instructions they’re short and worth it) and Help screens are offered with each new activity if you have any trouble. Also, the voice recognition pronunciation practice really breaks it down syllable by syllable and tells you where you are making mistakes.

My only complaint so far is the dictionary doesn’t have all the words used in the activities in it so sometimes you can’t really figure out what something says. I have a few years experience with speaking Spanish and since the languages are very similar it has been fairly easy to pick up Italian.

I would not advise anyone to buy this program who has never tried to learn another language before. The format would be very confusing and overwhelming. I have done great with this program but it’s not for everyone. I used Pimsler to learn some Polish a while back and it worked well for learning a few phrases quickly but TeLL me More gives a more in-depth view of the structure of the language which was what I was looking for this time.

I was amazed by the quality of that software. I had doubts about learning a language with a software after taking a look at Rosetta Stone, which has no grammar, and is very repetitive with these 4 pictures, as well as other programs I bought at my local store…I saw a review and decided to give TeLL me More a chance. I was amazed by the technology aspect and how well designed it is. It comes with a free headset and microphone and it really helped with my pronunciation. I have family in Italy and they were also amazed at my progress.

I also liked the cultural workshop as I was able to learn a lot of things about the Italian culture. I am at the Intermediate CD now and am confident I could have everyday conversations in Italian once I get to finish the Advanced level, rather than only know some sentences just useful for travel. My 2 teenagers are also using the software and it really helps them at school.

In struggling to learn Italian in anticipation of our trip there, I purchased four teaching products this year, plus several books, and took a continuing ed course. I am looking for a magic, easy way to learn, I guess. New languages are hard! (Age 62). My opinions:

I liked Tell me More Italian better than the similar Rosetta Stone Italian I. These are computer programs. Tell Me was more adaptable to my level, had more variety of exercises, and was in general more fun. Both of these programs gave me a confidence in my pronunciation that I never had in four college French courses many years ago.

I liked Pimsleur Conversational Italian (16 lesson version) better than the less expensive Penton Overseas Learn in Your Car Italian. These are CDs you play while driving. Pimsleur was more personal, more patient, and had more repetitive practice of conversation.

Finally, the continuing ed course, Italian I at Ohio State (eight two-hour classes), was invaluable for the best teaching of the basics of Italian (structure of the language such as conjugation) coaching from the personable teacher (Paola Nanni-Tate), the interaction with live students, and the pressure to study each week to avoid embarassing mistakes in class, which of course I made anyway.

This program may not be for everyone. It is a total immersion approach which asks the student to jump right in start speaking immediately. I studied on my own going up to level three. It took me about a year. At first I was perplexed but persisted with my studies. Being on CD, you can repeat words even a single syllable over and over until you’ve mastered them. When I enrolled in a university class, I was so far ahead of the others that my first year of Italian was a snap. Go with the flow on this program, there’s nothing quite like it any where short of a home tutor sitting next to you and they don’t repeat thing a million times until you get it. No human has that much patience.

And to make matters worse, some of the buttons go nearly transparent when the mouse pointer isn’t hovering over them, making it hard to tell that they are even there. It’s possible to not even know some options are available because of this navigation setup.

Teaching Tools:

Tell Me More has more teaching tools than any other Learn Italian software program. This can be a real benefit because the options are diverse. But they can also clutter the learning experience. Many of the learning activities don’t really promote learning Italian much (like word find puzzles with words that have no context or explanation). And many of the beginning level activities seem a little too difficult for a true beginner.

Tell Me More does offer an unsurpassed Italian cultural learning experience, including information on  geography, people and history.

Tell Me More Italian has developed one of the most impressive speech recognition programs in this category. This feature evaluates your Italian pronunciation and automatically detects errors. We’ve done a lot of research and I was looking for an opportunity to learn a little bit of Italian because we are going to be going to Italy next year, and I’ve looked at all the very high priced ones, all the way down to the very low cost tutorials on how to just speak the basic, not necessarily completely speak it fluently, but to understand it to the point where we can get around Italy, and understand certain words and certain phrases and things like that and be able to go into a coffee shop or, go into a market and be able to find the restroom or understand certain portions of the language.

We did some research and we started using the free version of the Rocket Italian or I should say the introduction to Rocket Italian and we at first took a couple of weeks to say “well is this what we want?”  We also went to a local bookstore and purchased a lesson in Italian that was a very inexpensive lesson, it was $25 or something like that.  And you get what you pay for, and it was just one of these things where it ran through all the language and the words and things like that, and really didn’t have any kind of flow to it.  So we really couldn’t memorize all that data.  So we feel that the Rocket Italian program and course is something you can learn, something you can easily remember and catch on because of the way you are distributing the course, by way of Internet, by way of email, by way of the lessons and your hosts are incredible.  My wife is hooked on Rocket Italian, ok, she comes home every day and she goes through the lessons.  And it’s a great product, great value.

Rosetta Stone also has an excellent speech recognition system that further improves the learning process. It’s easy to get feedback on accent and pronunciation and improve your ability to speak as well as understand.

Rosetta Stone didn’t make it into the top slot in our review because a few word tools could make the program a little more comprehensive, and there is no compatibility with portable media.
