Dr. Paul Pimsleur, an extremely well respected, internationally-known language expert. He developed a special way of learning a language which is all audio, the way we first learned our language as a child.” – PBS

If you want to learn conversational French fast, then Pimsleur French is for you. Pimsleur French is completely audio based NO WRITTEN MATERIALS.

Pimsleur French’s singular goal is to get you speaking French fast. Pimsleur focuses on teaching you the most common vocabulary and grammar used in the French language. Their theme is communication and from the get go you are presented with tactics and strategies to handle common social scenarios.

For example, one of the first French lessons teaches you to ask “Do you speak English?” in French. Communication is easier if you can establish that you both speak a common language.

The Pimsleur French course contains 30 lessons. For the most effective language learning experience, it is recommended to go through one lesson a day. You can listen to each lesson several times if you wish.

Each lesson is only 30 minutes long, this is the amount of time language learners tend to be most concentrated. The added benefit of this short length is that you will be able to go through one lesson without interruption.

A 30 minute French lesson is perfect while driving to work, or during a lunch break. Also, you should easily be able to find time to listen to it another time during the same day to enhance your language learning experience.

Special Offers

You get free membership to the Pimsleur Rapid Fluency Program +. A month after your registration, you start getting free trial copies of the advanced lessons for you to try for a period of 30 days.

If you’re not absolutely thrilled with your new ability to learn French and speak comfortably, simply return your course within 30 days for a full refund.

Pros and Cons of Pimsleur French

We have done some researching to compare Pimsleuer with Rosetta Stone, Rocket Language, Transparent & Fluenz (The Top 5 Most Popular French Learning Software)

Pimsleur Approach is our most recommended Language Learning Course for Beginners who want to learn Conversational French, but if Academic French is your final target, Tell me More French will be a better choice.

Advantages

  • The entire course is audio based, all your needs is a CD player or iPod.
  • Each audio lessons are 30 minute in duration. These lessons include common words and phrases used in everyday conversations. The audio quality s very good, making for clear speech, and the 4 CD content is aimed at fluency. It’s portable and fun to use.
  • Pimsleur courses are based on an “input/output” system where the student and teacher interact with each other. Active thinking is promoted by making the student anticipate answers. Thinking and recalling short term memory is what enhances your learning.
  • Applies four principles of learning
    1. The first principle the course applies is the “Graduated Interval Recall”. Here, new information is introduced at specific intervals, thus ensuring you learn thoroughly and effectively.
    2. The second principle is “Anticipation”, where the words learned are tested in different conversation scenarios and the student engages in meaningful interaction which enables better learning.
    3. The third principle is “Organic learning”. This means that nature has wired your brain to absorb and learn more though verbal interaction, so listening is more important than reading and writing. This is what the Pimsleur Approach does- it makes you listen.
    4. The fourth principle is “Core Vocabulary”, wherein the emphasis is on teaching the most important words required to learn a language, rather than lots of words.

Disadvantages

  • The course doesn’t teach you any grammar explicitly. This is not at all bad. How much English grammar do you know anyway?
  • Many reviews complain about the fact that with Pimsleur you will learn only about 500 words of the chosen language. This is true, but learning a lot of words is not the point of the Pimsleur approach, learning to speak is!
  • Speaking french in 10 days, really? I think you should be understand like this: 10 days = 240 hours, you spend half hours every day, and then 580 days later, you can speaking french fluently.

Pimsleur VS Michel Thomas

Both courses have advantages and disadvantages, which will vary from person to person. I have used both for Italian – I’m finished Michel Thomas’s foundation course and have been working through the Pimsleur course for a few weeks.

Michel Thomas

Format

Essentially, it’s a recording of Michel Thomas conducting a tutorial with two students. There are 8 CDs in the Foundation course, 4 in the Advanced and 2 in the third-stage Language builder; you dip in and out when you want, there’s no recommended interval to listen to in one sitting. MT will ask the students to say a sentence. You pause the CD and think of your answer, then resume to hear the student’s answer. MT will point out any mistakes they have made in sentence structure, verb conjugation or word emphasis and then give the full, correct sentence.

Content

His emphasis is on verbs. He will introduce a verb and show you how it would be used in a sentence. Grammar and vocabulary are picked up along the way.

His gimmick is to ask you to put together long sentences from the very beginning – for example, “I cannot speak with you now because I am very busy, but I will call you later.” It’s not the standard tourist stuff, but it makes you feel more confident using the language and gives the impression that you’re learning it properly right from the start: learning to construct meaningful sentences and rules for translating English words – not memorising stock phrases like I did for GCSE French.

Criticisms

In the Italian course at least, the students become incredibly annoying in the second half. They seem to ignore the rules MT has laid down and answer questions in the wrong tense. They make really stupid mistakes and keep repeating them, to the point where even the teacher becomes (very occasionally) dismayed and frustrated. Also, not much vocab that would be useful for a tourist.

Evaluation

The Michel Thomas method suits me down to the ground. I found that just about everything covered seemed to be miraculously retained. Mr Thomas explains the literal meaning of each phrase you learn and how it is used. He draws comparisons between how something would be expressed in Italian and how we would say it in English. Some people might find that information superfluous and would prefer to stick to bare Italian, but I found it very helpful in understanding how the language works.

Mr Thomas’s English accent poses a problem now and then, but I think this is overstated by some reviewers because my Italian doesn’t seem to have suffered. I have yet to find a discrepancy between the pronunciation I learned from the MT course and that of native speakers from other course CDs.

No course covers everything, but MT lays down very solid foundations – if his teaching method suits you.

Pimsleur

Format

The Pimsleur approach is very structured and based mainly on repetition. Each lesson begins with a conversation in your chosen language, which is broken down word by word. You are guided through the pronunciation by native speakers and repeat the phrases for most of the lesson. The lesson finishes with a conversation in which you think of the answer for yourself before hearing and repeating the correct answer. Pimsleur strongly recommend that you do one half-hour lesson per day, every day.

Content

I’m not yet through the Pimsleur course so unfortunately can’t comment much. One big advantage with Pimsleur is the emphasis on pronunciation: the demonstrations are by native speakers, so you get a more realistic idea of the speed of an exchange in your language – though still slower than in reality, of course!

Criticisms

The information sinks in, but the constant repetition gets boring. I don’t look forward to my daily half-hour sessions. I find them very dry. Nearly a week in, I was able to say I didn’t understand Italian very well, but that was only true because the course had covered next to nothing! Quite apart from wondering how much value there is in an Irish kid spending a week learning how to tell an Italian I am American, it’s the pace (or lack thereof) more than anything that bothers me.

Evaluation

Pimsleur is simply refining what I’d learned from the Michel Thomas CDs. Many have pointed out that Thomas is very obviously not a native speaker, but the difference between his pronunciation and that of the Pimsleur teachers was negligible and at the end of the day it’s pronunciation that counts. Where there have been small discrepancies between Pimsleur and MT, I’ve asked Italians over the net and it usually turns out that Pimsleur teaches the ‘textbook’ way of saying something, whereas MT teaches the more natural, everyday usage.

I would recommend starting with Michel Thomas. When you’re a few CDs into the 8-hour course, start doing the Pimsleur course in parallel. Neither are completely comprehensive, and you will still need spelling practice and extra vocab, for which I would recommend the Tell me More French and Rocket French.

At the end of the day, the only way to really, properly learn a language inside out is immersion, but a good combination of materials tailored your learning style can give you a massive boost.

Rosetta Stone relies on the picture-word association method to teach French. This is effective because it is also the way you learned English. Rosetta Stone helps you associate words and phrases with pictures that you recognize, slowly building a vocabulary. The interface is extremely simple and intuitive so that you can figure out how to operate it without any instruction. But the magical part is that you can also learn grammar along the way, without ever reading a single grammar rule. Speaking French, just like English, becomes innate.

Rosetta Stone also uses audio tracks and a speech recognition system to help you improve pronunciation, listening comprehension and conversation skills. Rosetta Stone manages to pack all the fundamentals into a simpler package than any other program. This learn French program isn’t perfect, though. Some of the things that kept Rosetta Stone from getting the top ranking was a lack of mobile compatibility, lack of culture lessons and the added expense of separate intermediate and advanced programs.

Pros and Cons of Rosetta Stone French

Advantages

  • Easy installation and work on Macs or PCs.
  • Great French learning course for kids. As you konw, picture-word association method is  very suitable for kids to learn any language.
  • Beautiful visual layout and software style. Tell me More French, Fluenz & Rosetta Stone, they have a good user interface design, you  can learn french with a simple and intuitive way.
  • It shows you how vocabulary and phrases are written. This might sound simple to you, but it will mean something when you know that other language learning methods such as Pimsleur Approach and Michel Thomas mostly have no written material, so you have to guess how words are spelled.
  • Quizzes: Another simple feature of Rosetta Stone but it is really worth it! It gives you lots of language exercises and tests to help you realize your progress.

Disadvantages

  • It provides ZERO language explanation, just vocabulary and phrases! That means it will leave you guessing the sentence structure, grammar, masculine and feminine, etc..
  • Written to teach English speaking people, not people who speak European or Asian languages
  • It can be tricky since it doesn’t provide detailed translations for the French phrases it teaches you! That means you will face more and more words that you have no idea what they really mean.
  • It teaches you the language, but it doesn’t tell you much about how to use it! Unlike Pimsleur French which teaches you step by step how to hold a conversation with French native speakers, Rosetta Stone French program doesn’t really stress that much its effort on this aspect of the French language, leaving you wondering where and how you ever would use the French phrases it teaches in a conversation.
  • It doesn’t always provide useful phrases to learn! Sometimes Rosetta Stone French will teach you useless phrases such as “a dog and an airplane” which you just can have no clue where on each you would have to say that phrase in French. That is one more reason why Rosetta Stone is great for kids since their mind and imagination are unlimited to logics and situations.
  • Price is ridiculously high if you buy the whole set of courses at once.

Rosetta Stone French Review

Ease of Use

Rosetta Stone French is very easy to use, PC and MAC computers supported. If you want to tracking your learning process on mobile devices, Rosetta Stone have not provided mobile apps, you can try Tell me More French (Our most recommended Comprehensive French Learning Software)

Rosetta Stone French uses aerial affection images in their able presentation. The Rosetta Stone French has a acceptable user interface that makes the software accessible to navigate. The software provides a chiral certificate for the appearance but alike after account this document, you can still apprentice all the functions of the features. The appearance and options buttons are simple to use and understand. You can calmly acquisition your way about alike if you are a amateur because the Rosetta Stone French provides a able program.

Effectiveness

Rosetta Stone French is best for those who already can speak and understand basic French. HOWEVER, I am saying that Rosetta Stone French course is best for those, not only works for those! The course is designed basically for those who have no idea about French language.

Rosetta Stone French is also great for kids! I honestly think that it works for kids much better than it would for adults. Why? Because as you know, children have something for colors, pictures and interactive software, while we adults seem to have forgotten about all the fun that colors and pictures bring.

I have a special experience with Rosetta Stone Japanese that I wrote about here before, I think same applies to Rosetta Stone French, I bought Rosetta Stone program for my nephew and nieces, and it really was wonderful to see how much Japanese they learnt from Rosetta Sone! I think the very same would apply to Rosetta Stone French course. Kids LOVE Rosetta Stone!

Supports

The Rosetta Stone website has many different support options, from FAQs and tutorials, to phone and email support if you have technical problems. The program also comes with a user manual that can answer a lot of simple questions.

Rosetta Stone has a 180 days exchange & return policy, Read this carefully before you purchase Rosetta Stone.

In my opinion, Fluenz and Tell me More both perfect french learning for any leveled French learners. Tell me More is more friendly for mobile devices, if you learn french most of the time at home, Fluenz puts great care into their product to make sure you come out speaking French like a champion!

Rosetta Stone is very suitable for kids, and it is best for those who already can speak and understand basic French. But with its expensive price, i don’t think it worth the price. If you don’t want to empty your pocket, then Rocket French or Pimsleur French will be better for time & money saving.

Michel Thomas was one of the world’s most famous language teachers when he died in 2005.

No books. No writing. No drills. And nothing to memorize – ever! With his unique program, Michel Thomas has taught celebrities, corporate leaders, and schoolchildren with immediate and amazing results. Now the Language Teacher to the Stars invites everyone to join his class!

Using French with Michel Thomas, listeners learn in real time–fully understanding as they go along, turning words into short sentences, and then building them into longer, more complex sentences, until they are conversing in French.

Michel will have listeners formulating their own thoughts and sentences from the very beginning, even if they have never succeeded in learning a language before. Michel has used this very method to teach celebrities such as Mel Gibson, Woody Allen, Barbra Streisand, Warren Beatty, and Princess Grace of Monaco.

French with Michel Thomas Audio CD

Michel Thomas’ system relies upon his ability to teach, rather than your ability as a student, and contrary to most methods where the ball is very much in your court when it comes to interacting, the Michel Thomas way requires you simply to relax and take things in!

There seems to be a mysterious aura surrounding this method of French learning. For example, most French learners have at some stage or another tried out language CD’s which require the listener to respond out loud to the recorded conversation, and then followed up with the corresponding written activity in the accompanying book, yet Michel Thomas actually instructs his students not to try to learn or remember anything and not to write things down.

On the CD’s, you hear Michel talking to two of his students in a rhythmical, almost hypnotic voice. It’s amazing how much more relaxing and less annoying this is than the CD’s where you hear snippets of improbable role-plays, and I have to confess that I was quite taken in by the whole process. The CD’s were really enjoyable, so much so that they earned a dedicated 30 minute slot every day for a few weeks.

Learn French as a second language is more easy if you are familiar with English grammar. Fluenz uses English language (Most people know it on the level which is enough to learn a new language) as a leverage for French learning process. These technique is useful when you go slowly learning every aspect of previous chapters.

The Fluenz French course focuses around a one-on-one tutoring session followed by many different exercises that get progressively harder and reinforce what was learned. Even though there is never a vocabulary list or a grammar rule in sight, all the important information still comes across during the lesson and exercises. This simple method coupled with an uncomplicated interface makes Fluenz one of the best choices for learning French. If you need a teaching system that is more intuitive than textbook retention, Fluenz is the program for you.

Pros & Cons of Fluenz French

Advantages

  • Learn at your own pace, do the lessons when most convenient to yourself.
  • Beautiful interface and awe-inspiring pictures make you wish you were in France, now.
  • The discs come  packaged in a neat, little red box. Presentation is very professional.
  • Thoroughness of lessons, tons of exercises. You truly learn with this program.
  • A “challenge mode” can be enabled. Forcing the need to type accents within responses.
  • Five complete discs which increase with difficulty. Beginners can start from square one while more advanced learners can start from disc 2, 3, or 4…
  • Excellent teachers.
  • Fluenz’s Company and customer support is top notch.
  • A 12-month warranty.

Disadvantages

  • The software is only as effective as you make it.  If you skip a lot of days, or do not feel like doing all of the exercises, then you’re only cheating yourself!
  • The software cannot evaluate your speech, only provide you with native speech recordings. You have the ability to plug in a microphone and speak but nobody will be speaking back!
  • Some dislike the fact that Sonia Gil is not a Native French Speaker. Her French is still good though. Carolyn Janin replaces Sonia in Fluenz 4 and 5 – she is a native Parisian.
  • Some say that Fluenz is a little too “Tourist” focused (I.e, Fluenz vocabulary is based off of things like giving directions, ordering food, buying a train/airplane ticket, greetings, etc…)

Fluenz French Review

Ease of Use

Fluenz French is very easy to use, PC and MAC computers supported. If you want to tracking your learning process on mobile devices, Fluenz have not provided mobile apps, you can try Tell me More French (Our most recommended Comprehensive French Learning Software)

Fluenz has one of the simplest and most intuitive interfaces of any program we reviewed. It is easy to navigate through lessons or between segments of a lesson. And each activity is simple enough to be done without needing instructions.

Effectiveness

An effective approach for English Speakers. There is no more effective way to understand French liaisons, verb conjugations and masculine/feminine endings than from a tutor explaining these important subtleties in English. And there is no way to learn French really well without mastering these fundamental elements of the language. Because French and English share roots dating back to the 11th century, they have many similarities that can be taken advantage of in order to accelerate the learning process.

Tailor-Made Approach Emphasizing Culture and Context. Just as importantly, the Fluenz tutor spends considerable time going over cultural issues, providing context and anecdotes that make the process meaningful. By making sense of this historic and elegant language, learners actually learn it.

Great One-On-One Teaching, Engaging Workouts. Fluenz French is divided into sessions that are introduced and led by the the on-screen tutor. After a realistic conversation between native French speakers, she returns to give a full tutorial on all the new words and structures to be learned in that session.

Next comes a series of challenging workouts that provide an ideal training ground for developing the learner’s reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Each session features a set of clear, common sense tools that make a true difference.

Supports

Fluenz offers user manuals and FAQs to help you answer your questions. Before you purchase Fluenz French, you can request a DEMO Program to help you understand how it works on Fluenz’s official site.

If you need more help, you can contact Fluenz through email or phone. But the most effective method for getting help is through their live chat option. The technicians on the live chat service were prompt, knowledgeable and eager to help.

Final Words

In my opinion, Fluenz and Tell me More both perfect french learning for any leveled French learners. Tell me More is more friendly for mobile devices, if you learn french most of the time at home, Fluenz puts great care into their product to make sure you come out speaking French like a champion! Transparent Chinese Review

Pros

Cons

  • Everywhere audio Chinese course, so you can take it with your ipod or whatever.
  • A step-by-step comprehensive course, great learning process
  • Online community for sharing
  • More competitive price than Tell me More Chinese or Rosetta Stone Chinese

  • Windows Only, you can’t run transparent software on a MAC
  • Too complex for chinese beginers
  • Uer Interface design is not so good

Transparent claims that if you learn with their software, you will never forget what you’ve learned.  It takes a while to complete each lesson, but once you finish it, you have done, all using different games and activities that keep you from getting bored. Also, their learning process is great. I loved learning vocabulary with the Byki Deluxe. And when I was finished with it, I was well prepared to jump into the main software.

Finally, I love their online community, where you can share your custom vocabulary lists, as well as download lists make by others–this keeps your software valuable even after you’ve learned everything in it.

With clients such as the US Defence Language Institute and FSI there is no doubting Transparent Language’s reputation. In my opinion Transparent Chinese is a comprehensive course that is well suited to an experienced self-learner who is wanting to study Mandarin Chinese from home.

While I like this software, there are a few improvements that could be made. First, the design looks pretty dated. When you open it, you don’t see something that looks like the latest and greatest Apple product. Also, in my opinion, it could use a bit of instruction in regards to pronouncing pinyin. They jump right in to Chinese characters, which is kind of difficult.

For students who have not previously experienced learning a second language I believe that Transparent Chinese may be a little too advanced. For most of us, the best way to learn chinese is live in china, if you got a plan for china trip, Rocket Chinese or Pismleur Chinese are both better choices, this two chinese learning software will help you improve conversational chinese skill in short time.

However, with such a complete course being delivered at a very competitive price I would advise all Mandarin Students to check it out.

Rosetta Stone language software is a computer package for learning languages. It is unusual in that it does not offer any translations – all the learning material is in the target language.

Through a series of photographs, students gradually build vocabulary and grammar by selecting the appropriate picture after listening to an audio clip. This natural process is similar to how infants acquire language – listening and repeating.

Rosetta Stone Chinese provides a natural learning environment and the progressive lessons allow you to master vocabulary and grammar at a controlled pace.

The only thing Rosetta Stone cannot help you with is conversation. Work with a tutor for this – either in a classroom or one-on-one instruction – and you will get the necessary conversation practice. Rosetta Stone stands well on its own, but if you can combine it with classroom instruction you are well on the way to mastering Mandarin Chinese.

Pros and Cons of Roseeta Stone Chinese

Pros

Cons

  • Comprehensive language course
  • Good interactive emphasis
  • Online Access for  a lower price
  • Mac/PC Surported

  • Slow vocabulary learning
  • Sometimes unclear quizzes
  • Sometimes not teaching useful phrases
  • Expensive and have not provided a free trial

Rosetta stone has its own reputation in the field of langauge learning. Their users swear by their name. However, when I review it against Rocket Chinese, I find it fails to deliver the kind of punch that Rocket Chinese delivers. The first disappointment comes in the form of fact that it is divided into three levels. You got to pay separately for each of the three levels, that is costly.

The other big disadvantage was that it is a totally computer based course, which means you got to stuck to your computer. I can’t load it up my mp3 player and go listen to it while I drive. If you are not very comfortable sitting in front of computers for long hours, stay away.

With that being said, the course does offer some real good value for money. The lessons are very well planned and the delivery model is good. If you plan to buy two courses then you should definitely consider this. If you can’t afford that much then Rocket chinese is the better choice.

The approach that Fluenz Spanish takes to learning Spanish is a little different from most other Spanish Learning Software. Fluenz Spanish have focused on simulating a one-on-one learning experience by including videos of a private tutor teaching you each lesson. Following that, this Spanish learning course emphasizes memory retention by offering a series of increasingly difficult activities, which culminate in your participation in a full conversation.

Fluenz Spanish works on PC or MAC, you request their online demo program at fluenz.com. But i highly suggest you read reviews on amazon.com before you purchase this learning software.

Fluenz Spanish is quite expensive than most spanish learning software, is it worth the price? In my opinion, fluenz spanish is not my first choice for Spanish learning. Tell me More Spanish will be a better choice, 2 reasons in my mind:

1. With Tell me More WebPass spanish, you get instant access online course & additional learning resource Just $40/month. If tell me more spanish do not works, you can quit any time, and request refund. It is absolutely no risk investment!

2. Tell me More mobile app can ensure your learning progress. For Fluenz, you  can only listen the audio course on your mobile devices.

Anyway, despite these 2 deficiencies, Fluenz Spanish is still one of the best choices to help you learn Spanish. One advantage of this style of learning is that it makes Fluenz more relevant for tourists and business people who will be travelling. The makers of Fluenz avoided some of the more traditional learn Spanish vocabulary lessons in favor of practical words that the average person is more likely to use.

With the combination of an elegantly simple interface, well-planned lessons and multi-media curriculum, Fluenz manages to make the Spanish learning process both easy and effective. It’s an obvious choice when looking for learn Spanish software.

Fluenz Spanish VS Rosetta Stone Spanish

I went on a vacation to Costa Rica, and resolved to learn Spanish. I studied French in high school and college, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I’ve NEVER had an opportunity to actually use my French, as I’ve found that everyone who speaks French usually speaks English. So, I thought I would try to learn Spanish, and maybe I could actually use it.

I found a website which reviewed many Spanish Learning Software packages, and many of them are only PC compatible. The two highest rated Mac compatibles were Fluenz and Rosetta Stone, #2 & #3, respectively. I had seen the Rosetta Stone commercials ad nauseum, so I thought it would be a good starting point. The “no drills” and “no memorization” aspects sounded great, so RS was my starting point.

I started out with Rosetta Stone 1, 2, & 3. RS is a beautiful program, with lovely pictures, and an intuitive interface. There were many, many times when I was clueless as to what to do, so I would just click until I got it right. RS would sense this, and would present the material again until I scored 90% or better. However, there WERE times when I would figure out the answer through the process off elimination, without truly understanding what I was saying/doing. For example, “comprar”: did it mean “to shop” or “to buy”? I couldn’t tell. Also, the speech recognition on Rosetta Stone could prove to be very temperamental. There were some words, some ONE-SYLLABLE words, that RS simply couldn’t accept. I would record them with my iPhone, and play it back into the microphone, and it STILL wouldn’t work. These occasions were rare, but troublesome. There were multi-syllable words or phrases that I had to use the iPhone trick for. I could repeat it one hundred times into the microphone, and it would NEVER NEVER accept what I said. After a while, I felt like I was getting great practice on how to record phrases with my iPhone, but for learning Spanish, my progress was slow. Also, I wasn’t learning anything practical for use as a tourist. I want to learn how to bargain a little bit: “I will give you fifty, OK?” I wasn’t getting that with Rosetta Stone. I think I completed Disc 2 of RS. Again, it was good, but there were many things that I wasn’t sure about.

I heard about Fluenz from that website, and decided to give it a try. I ordered 1+2+3+4+5. A bit ambitious, but, like anything, the unit price goes down when you buy in bulk. I just finished up the first disc, so I’m not at any kind of expert level, but I liked what I’ve seen so far. I feel like I’ve really nailed the present tense conjugations of the following words: To Be (both Estar and Ser), To Go (very useful for meatball future tense), To Want, To Need, To Eat, To Drink. These words will get a tourist through a great many situations.

Fluenz’s approach is different than Rosetta Stone. They start with Sonia Gil giving an intro, then a simple conversation between two or more people. You can listen to it without subtitles, with Spanish subtitles, or with English and Spanish subtitles. You should listen to it three times, once with each subtitle option. Sonia comes back, and breaks down the dialog, explaining what each word means, and how they relate to each other. There are then various drills, many of which involve typing down what you hear. These are challenging, and fun for me. I pride myself on my spelling, and these can be hard but satisfying to complete.

Fluenz does NOT use voice-recognition, which simply and effectively eliminates the frustrations I had with RS. My accent may not be as polished as it might be with RS, but at least I’m not fretting about getting stuck on a certain passage, wondering if it is me or the computer that is at fault. However, Fluenz DOES make use of the microphone. The aforementioned conversations are repeated, with you taking the role of one of the characters. You say the line that is shown, and click ‘stop’, and the conversation continues. You then play back the conversation, so you can hear your own voice. At that point in the lesson, you can tell if your accent is crap or not. And this works for me. I want to be a tourist, not a Telemundo newscaster. If I can crack a joke in Spanish, and make a senorita laugh, then this whole language thing will have paid off.

One thing I’ve found to be kind of humorous: Sonia Gil is very attractive. Sometimes my mind goes blank, as I’m just staring at her face, and I miss what she said completely. Doh!

MacBook users: Both Rosetta Stone and Fluenz work beautifully with my 2009 MacBook. No external microphones needed. RS adjusts the sensitivity of the microphone automatically, Fluenz does not. You will have to go System Preferences/Sound to adjust it. Once you do, it is done. No problem.

I recommend Fluenz over Rosetta Stone, especially if you are an adult who wants to ‘speak tourist’. Rosetta Stone is good, but the little snags proved to be frustrating for me. Fluenz is more real world oriented, with expressions like: “We are going to the store together, would you like to come?”, whereas Rosetta Stone had expressions like: “The car is in front of the house” or “the dog wants meat”

The people at Fluenz are great as well. I ordered 1+2+3+4+5, but I only received 1+2+3. I contacted Amazon, who said “Because Fluenz’s inventory is constantly changing, we can’t replace items sold by them that are Fulfilled by Amazon.” I could either return the whole thing, or they could refund part of the money. I let Fluenz know about this, and they promptly sent me the missing discs 4+5. So Fluenz’s customer service is great. Over educated young college grads.

Follow Up: 5/17/10: I’ve been using Fluenz, off and on, (it’s hard to remain focused), but to address my previous statement: “For example, “comprar”: did it mean “to shop” or “to buy”? I couldn’t tell. ” Comprar means both “to shop for” and “to buy”. Doh!

I trade comments with Sonia on Facebook, she’s the best! Nothing wrong with Rosetta Stone, but Fluenz is the real deal, in my opinion.

By Todd Smith “Hot Toddy” (Pawling, NY)
Like everyone else, I’m comparing what I consider to be the two top dogs when it comes to Spanish language learning software: Fluenz and Rosetta Stone. Which software you should choose depends on what you want to be able to do first. Do you think it’s more important to learn to order food in a restaurant, or explain where a cat is in relation to a table? It’s a serious question, because therein lies the difference between these two programs.Rosetta Stone assumes that you are an infant who should learn colors and animals first. If you are an infant, stop reading, and navigate to the Rosetta Stone section. If you are an adult who would rather learn the word for “cellphone” before “horse,” then you should undoubtedly choose Fluenz.

Fluenz features a slick user-interface and a real person who acts as your personal tutor. (Incidentally, she is quite attractive.) Unlike Rosetta Stone, which uses a strict immersion model, Fluenz relates Spanish to English in order to build on the knowledge you already have about grammar and the way words work together. With Rosetta Stone, I found myself having to look up words because the pictures are sometimes unclear. For instance, there was a picture of a child and a man with the word “abuelo.” I didn’t know that it meant “grandfather” until I consulted a dictionary. You can’t rely strictly on visual cues for everything. With Fluenz, every detail is spelled out and explained for you. You are told the precise meaning of every word and given tips for pronunciation and usage. I have found that this explicit approach is much more effective for my learning style. Your experience, of course, may vary.

After the principal lesson, Fluenz tasks you with a series of “workouts.” These are very enjoyable exercises that increase in difficulty and require different skills than Rosetta Stone exercises. For instance, in Rosetta Stone, you can almost always use process of elimination to choose the correct picture. In Fluenz, you are almost immediately asked to construct your own sentences using the words you’ve learned. In other exercises, you must transcribe spoken dialogue. I immediately realized that comprehending an entire spoken sentence was much more difficult than comprehending a single word. To me, it’s a far more aggressive approach than Rosetta Stone, and I can feel my brain working harder.

I will also say that I have used Rosetta Stone quite a bit, but I stopped using it because I simply became bored with the tedium of the program. I find Fluenz far more stimulating. I can hardly wait to come home every day and use it again. It’s as addictive as a video game, and the best part is that I’m getting practical knowledge of Spanish that I can immediately apply to real life situations. I’m so fond of the program that I plan to try the Italian next.

If you are on the fence, but are one of those people who tend to go with the most popular choice, let me say this: Rosetta Stone will probably always outsell Fluenz. The reason is simple. Rosetta Stone only needs one Spanish program that it can sell world wide, because it does not teach using other languages. From a business standpoint, it’s genius. From a learning standpoint, it’s lacking. Fluenz is specifically designed for those who speak English to learn Spanish. If this statement applies to you, pick Fluenz over Rosetta Stone.

By Ex Ell (Oklahoma, USA)
I have completed 4 of the 5 levels of Fluenz Spanish and am on lesson 3 of level 5. Before investing in this great language learning program, I tried RS, Rocket Spanish and Tell Me More Spanish. Fluenz is by far the best language learning software out there if you are serious about LEARNING the Spanish language. My background…Never studied a language before. I’m retired and was looking to something to keep the brain hoping along. I liked the Spanish language so much that I decided to work towards an oral proficiency rating so I enrolled in a Spanish certificate program at the University of Wisconsin (7 semesters of Spanish required). I tested out of Spanish 1. I’m currently taking Spanish 2, and outside of additional vocabulary, I found that I knew all of grammar and sentence construction required for Spanish 2 and should have enrolled in Spanish 3. So, I’m at least at a 3rd semester university level of Spanish. My Spanish professor continually praises my pronunciation, knowledge of grammar and sentence construction. Where did I learn all of this? Using the Fluenz program!

As I stated at the start, I have tried Rosetta Stone (fell asleep), Rocket Spanish (very little grammar)and Tell Me More Spanish (not bad but only for those who are at an intermediate level). By far, Fluenz Spanish offers the most grammar instruction of any of the others and will provide you with a solid foundation in the Spanish language. Some have posted reviews here after only completing 1 – 2 levels. If your goal is ‘fluency’ I suggest that you finish all of the lessons before judging how much fluency you will acquire using this program. How do you measure fluency anyway? What does that mean? I will say that Fluenz’s main focus is not on building a huge vocabulary but on building a strong foundation. What good is it to know a lot of Spanish words if you don’t know how to construct a sentence or conjugate classes of verbs or know when to use ser vs estar or pasear vs cominar or para vs por? You will not be understood if you can’t put the words you know together to communicate with a Spanish speaker. That is the main goal of the Fluenz program….teaching you to communicate!

Learning a new language, may initially seem fairly simple, but it is not. Learning a new language requires lots and lots of hard work. If you are only looking to parrot some touristy phrases then maybe this is not the program for you because you will learn far more. At first glance, it may seem that the conversations revolve around touristy type things but everything you learn is applicable to everyday situations. I know. It’s what I’ve been doing in my UWM class. All communications are in Spanish using Skype, voice boards and e-mail. The professor lives in Spain! We write about the economy in Spain, our dogs, cultural things, different sites in Madrid, etc.

Any language learning program is, by nature, scripted. It helps to use supplemental materials such as a grammar workbook for extra practice, listening and listening and listening to lots of Spanish even if you don’t understand it verbatim, finding a Spanish speaking partner to communicate with, etc. Fluenz will provide you with a solid foundation on which to build your fluency, but, in the end it’s up to the student to reach out and explore additional learning opportunities. Most of us didn’t learn English in 6 months!

The top 6 reasons to invest in yourself and buy this program:

1. The onscreen tutor – nothing on the market comes close to the benefits of having a real person explain, what can be, complex grammar and sentence constructions.

2. Emphasis on correct pronunciation – It’s not so much how fast someone speaks, it’s how clearly they enunciate each word. All of the Spanish speakers enunciate each word very clearly. Also, the speech speed starts out slower in the early lessons and increases to a speed you will hear, say, watching Spanish language television.

3. Each lesson builds on previous lessons. It may seem a bit repetive, however, the goal is to move the student from a translational phase to an instinctual phase where not much thought is needed to communicate in Spanish.

4. Customer support – best in the business. Most language learning software companies only provide technical support. The Fluenz team is ready, willing and able to provide all the language support you could ever want. Stuck on a concept? Just ask. You’ll get an easily understandable answer complete with examples.

5. Provides a strong foundation on which to continue to build your fluency. After only 4 levels, I feel that I can pretty much figure out something new when I see it because my foundation is so strong. My Spanish professor does not restrict her use of the language to what we have already learned but I have been able to understand what she is communicating whether she’s using a verb tense that I’ve not seen, words I don’t know or Spanish idioms and sayings.

6. Supplemental CDs and podcasts – Hearing spoken Spanish w/o subtitles forces you to focus on what is being said overall. You may not understand what is being said verbatim, but if you can pick up key words, you will know what the speaker is communicating. Great for practicing what you will experience in the real world.

And, one last thing, the interface is simple and beautiful! The program is for adults, taught by adults.

Fluenz Mandarin was designed specifically to teach people that already understand English Mandarin Chinese in a way that makes the most sense to them, based on the patterns and structure of the English Language. It is a digital course based on home class, that makes significant use of video, audio and images to stimulate your senses when learning.

Fluenz Mandarin is a very comprehensive chinese learning course, it consists 45 leraning sessions, totally about 90 hours. It was designed to take learners to fluency, not only teach you basic phrases.

Fluenz Mandarin claims its effectiveness by recreating a traditional learning platform, such as a small classroom or private tuition. In fact, the software includes an “on-screen” teacher named Sonia Gill, that actually explains things to you as though you are in her classroom. She herself learned Mandarin from scratch having spoken only English, and is therefore is in a good position to understand your points of difficulty as an English speaker.

Fluenz Chinese VS Rosetta Stone Chinese

You can get fluenz chinese at amazon.com. If you did not never hear anything about fulenz chinese learning course, there is a best place to know how fluenz help peoples to learn chinese in a fast way. A tons of useful customer reviews and opinions from peoples who pruchased fluenz chinese.

When I decided to buy software to learn Mandarin, I thought Rosetta Stone was the only option. Luckily, I came across Fluenz before it was too late.

At first, I was intrigued by Rosetta Stone’s no-English rule and spent some time with their demo. But after comparing the Rosetta and Fluenz, I started to think the Fluenz method might be better. Sonia Gil, an English-speaking tutor, gives you tools to build phrases, and then sentences. The Fluenz linguists believe, and I tend to agree, that adults learn differently than children.

By explaining key things in English, rather than having a bunch of Chinese thrown at them, adults can learn how to say many things very quickly. If you visit the Fluenz site you can see how powerful this is when it comes to learning phrases like “I need a taxi”, or “I want a cup of coffee” in the first lessons. It would take weeks or even months for anyone to learn those phrases in Chinese the Rosetta way, by merely pairing images with their corresponding words. It seems difficult to learn a language without a teacher or tutor, and it is impossible to learn Chinese tones without a proper explanation.

The Fluenz learning experience is further enhanced by its beautiful design. By comparison, the Rosetta V2 application, though nicely packaged, doesn’t seem that up to date (once you pass the demo video, you can actually see what the real interface looks like). But the strongest point for Fluenz is the human element. Sonia takes the learner step by step, building skills that are practiced in a series of very creative workouts covering writing, reading, comprehension and expression.

Overall, my experience with Fluenz has been great. I fully recommend the software for anyone interested in Mandarin.

Fluenz and Rosetta Stone are both multi-media programs for learning Mandarin Chinese, and they both offer a free demo to help us to undertand how it works.

Fluenz Mandarin is a recently made program, using English as needed to explain what you are learning in Mandarin. Its methodology derives from cutting-edge research into how adults learn additional languages.

Rosetta Stone Chinese is a more expensive program using their long-established method for teaching languages by only using pictures and the language they are teaching, not using any English at all. This is based on concepts about learning that treat adults the same as young children in learning languages, and it means that the program can’t use English to explain things like the different tones in Chinese.

Fluenz Chinese VS Rocket Chinese

Fluenz is more expensive & comprehensive than rocket chinese, Based on well-thought theories of how people learn.

With Rocket Chinese, you get exceptional value for the money with download version. Also, with the focus on the audio files, it is easier to use while exercising. And, i love their online community forum, it is a great place for conversation with chinese speaking peoples.
