For learning Spanish, French, Italian, or Chinese as a Second language online, the website at Yabla.com offers its own variety of language program videos and activities. Here is a review of Yabla language learning software and their online language learning facilities.

Yabla is the most loved free online language learning courses for foreign language beginners!

Yabla Introduction

Are you studying a foreign language like Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese or English as a second language? Do you have access to native speakers for listening comprehension and speaking / pronunciation practice? If you are studying one of these foreign languages but don’t have extensive access to native speakers for development of your language skills, then the Yabla Language Immersion website may just be for you.

Yabla is “language immersion through online video” and probably the most useful language website I’ve used so far. The videos come from a variety of sources, whether they are news reports, interviews, or just random scenes filmed in the country to illustrate authentic use of the language. Subtitles and translations appear under the video, which you can turn off if you’d like, and clicking on a word will search for its definition in the dictionary pane to the right.  You can also slow down the play back so the speech is slower, or put it on a loop to repeat a certain word or phrase.  Then you can choose the play game button to start the listening/cloze exercise and type in the missing word.

Yabla offers free online language learning videos and demos which is encouraging to potential subscribers. You have more than an ample opportunity to “prove” the Yabla subscription language learning website before laying out any of your hard-earned pesos, francs, euros or other cash currency. Their videos offer some distinctive features important to foreign language learners which include:

  • A slow-play feature to aid in listening comprehension
  • A repeat feature allowing stopping and repeating of a phrase or segment multiple times to increase comprehension and mimicking practice
  • Short videos focused on a single theme or element. effectively isolating language learning themes
  • Five levels of videos and interactive lessons ranging from easy to difficult

Currently, They’ve just added a new flashcards feature, and the Spanish & French sites also have blogs of language lessons on grammar and vocabulary. All of the languages have hundreds of videos available, and the French site does have some Quebecois videos as well.

Monthly subscriptions are $9.95 a month per course, with discounts for 6 or 12 month subscriptions ($54.95 or $99.95) with a 7 day money-back guarantee.  For schools, institutes and other group pricing, the cost per year varies based on the number of users, from one up to one thousand for each language.

You can download many of the videos through the website or iTunes as well to take with you instead of watching them all online.

Spanish on Yabla

According to the Yabla website, videos are culled from “contemporary television, film and music”, with the videos intended for native speakers and made by native speakers. Yabla website videos also feature native speakers from different countries to provide listening comprehension access to a variety of accents and pronunciation. In the Spanish section videos website area called “LoMasTv.com”, for example, free video demo and paid program speakers are from Argentina, Peru, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Chile, Honduras, Uruguay and Colombia. There are also some fun listening games in both French and Spanish. There is a section with Spanish for K to 12 Learners with materials and videos suited for young learners.

French on Yabla

For online French video immersion at the French.Yabla website, visit their “French for All” section, which features “authentic” French Video for adult learners, educators, and students using contemporary French TV, music, film, travel” and exclusive Yabla-prepared content. As with Spanish, there are free video demos and paid program speakers, but principally with Parisian and other regional French accents.

Chinese on Yabla

The newest chinese learning program of Yabla including 126 videos, Chinese Flashcard Vocabulary Game &  Chinese English Pinyin Dictionary.
When learning a new language, one of the biggest challenges is to stay engaged. Yabla Chinese provides a wide variety of entertaining programming, including music, drama, interviews, and travel, that will make you look forward to studying. Fresh programming is added monthly. Learning a language is a bit like going to the gym. If it were universally fun, everyone would be in shape. We believe language learning shouldn’t be a chore.
Numerous studies done on language retention all point to the fact that the best way to learn is to become immersed in the language. Becoming versed in reading and writing is a good place to start, but you must also listen to native speakers. Most people don’t have direct access to Chinese-speaking populations. Watching Yabla Chinese provides this access in an environment where you have full control.

Yabla German Podcast on iTunes

Pros

From what I’ve seen on Yabla, I highly recommend this resource. It is really unique from other online learning resources in several ways:

  • The vast variety of authentic videos.
  • Videos for all levels of German.
  • Fabulous video viewing and learning features.
  • Plenty of music videos to chose from – great for high school students who want to learn more about what’s trendy and hip in today’s German music scene.
  • Reasonable prices.

Cons

Nothing is perfect, so yes, here are a few things that I find are missing in Yabla:

  • More rudimentary beginner videos are needed.
  • Yabla.com is geared more towards learners from high school and up. I think more German cartoons would make a welcome addition for younger learners.
  • Some music videos have mature content matter, which may not be suitable in certain classrooms. However, yabla.com states that they can streamline your subscription account to omit these types of videos.

LangMaster Language Learning Course Review

Advantages of LangMaster

  • Multimedia. By using different forms of media to teach the students, LANGMaster makes learning a new language more interesting and engaging.
  • Speech Recognition. Unlike other online courses, LANGMaster uses speech recognition technology so that the student learns to pronounce everything correctly before moving on to more advanced stages.
  • Interactive. In addition to the speech recognition, this course offers Click&See and Say&See methods that are designed to help the student translate the words immediately.
  • Affordable. The basic course is available for free download and an additional license key can be purchased for 27 Euros ($36.41 US dollars).

Disadvantages of LangMaster

  • Not Structured. The course covers many areas of learning a new language, but the course is not completely structured. The student has the freedom to pick and choose lessons as they go, which prevents them from creating building blocks.
  • Only for Download. This course does not contain any CDs or hard copies. The only time you will be able to practice is when you are sitting at the computer.
  • Not Mac Compatible. The program is only compatible with Microsoft Windows. If you are a Mac user, certain functions won’t work for you.
  • Accessories not included. You have to supply your own sound card, microphone and have the correct system requirements to run this program.

I was initially impressed by LangMaster not only because their online lessons are completely free, but also because of the number of exercises and audio files available. Even their software and listening programs are reasonably priced (13-27€) with a 14-day free trial plus Collins dictionary. The free online lessons are available in German, French, English, Italian and Spanish while the software also includes Russian.

There are plenty of opportunities for improving reading, writing, and listening skills and increasing your vocabulary. The lessons are completely in the target language so you may need to keep a dictionary open in another browser. There are cultural notes and grammar notes throughout but they are mostly examples until you get to the last chapter of each lesson, where there is a review explained in English (and which you can skip if you don’t care so much for grammar).

The recordings are mostly scripted but there are also some interviews with more authentic language, and examples of realia from the countries where the language is spoken (photos of signs, menus, brochures, etc.)  Usually the transcripts are provided, whether in the same lesson or later on, so you can check your comprehension.

A few of the disadvantages to LangMaster are that it is only available in the four main foreign languages and the audio is only streaming so you can’t download it. If you like flashcards, langmaster has no built-in system to review vocabulary, Tell me More or Fluenz will be better for you. In spite of these few faults, it is the most complete language program available online for free so I recommend it.

Linguaphone Review

Advantages of Linguaphone Language Courses

1. Linguaphone offers courses that teach you to read, write and speak the language.
2. Many of the Linguaphone courses have very nice manuals with beautiful pictures and the dialog of what you are going over in a lesson.
3. Linguaphone has some courses that are all audio so you can learn on the move.
4. Linguaphone courses are based on: listen, understand and speak. This method has been used for over 100 years.
5. Many people rate Linguaphone very high on their list of language courses.

Disadvantages of Linguaphone Language Courses

1. If you don’t have a basic knowledge of the language you are learning, Linguaphone courses can be somewhat difficult because it moves along too fast, without enough repetition.
2. On some of the Linguaphone audio you will need to listen very carefully.
3. You may want to go over another language course series, like Pimsleur, and use Linguaphone to expand your language skills, vocabulary and listening comprehension.
4. Linguaphone prices range from inexpensive to expensive depending on the course.

Effectiveness

Linguaphone is over a hundred years old and one of the original language courses available. This made me a little nervous about reviewing it as I certainly didn’t want to do it a disservice but I also wanted to be as honest as possible. I have used Linguaphone before when I was about 18: it was the complete French course and I remember being extremely daunted by all the material and use of the foreign language. I was interested to see how the allTalk product would do.

To begin with I liked the scenario idea of the young lady on a trip to Italy and the whole course being based around her introduction to the Italian Language. She begins speaking English and slowly starts to speak in Italian as Lorenzo teachers her new vocabulary and sentences. The acting is well done and the Italian clear and easy to hear.

The main introduction of the vocabulary is in the lessons after the initial conversation is heard; the narrator gives the words as a list with the Italian and the English and then a gap. There is an awful lot of vocabulary here. If learning as much vocabulary as you can is your goal then this is ideal for you as they throw list upon list at you and then test them with practice lessons. It is very difficult to learn and remember all the vocab given, and reviews of previous lessons are essential. The method of delivery of the vocabulary reminds me of receiving vocab lists at school, and although the practice lessons are more original and effective than I remember them being at school, the method is possibly not the most efficient at helping students remember quickly.

The grammar is covered occasionally in the lessons with passing comments about important points, or the verb boxes which show full conjugation of verbs. This is adequate for a beginners understanding of the structure and grammar of the language, although as the amount of vocabulary learned is so high I would have thought more grammar would have been included. The book included covers a little grammar but is mostly just a dictionary of the vocabulary covered in the course.

Cost and Value

£237.91 is not a cheap price for linguaphone complete. In my opinion, Pimsleur Approach or Rocket Languages will be better in Cost & Value.

Linguaphone has 15 language courses. (Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish)

Most people’s ratings of Linguaphone are positive. It covers all language core skills, oral, aural, writing and reading. Linguaphone courses are very thorough courses. People who like written transcripts of the dialog will like Linguaphone. The narrators on the Linguaphone courses are British speakers.

Pimsleur Method devised by language educator Dr Paul Pimsleur,  Pimsleur English Language course provides you with a comprehensive, self instructional, step-by-step guide on how to learn English.

The Pimsleur method is so effective because it is based on tried and tested techniques and principles that have proved to enable rapid and successful English language learning.

The unique Pimsleur audio method allows the listener to learn English pronunciation, English vocabulary, English words, English phrases and English grammar without repetitive rote learning, in a similar way to how we acquired our native language components.

What is the Pimsleur Difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of a new language’s structure without tedious drills. Because of this, learning to speak becomes enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren’t given proper instruction – only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only pieces – dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or even thousands of words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its pieces.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That same learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

Pimsleur English as a Second Language courses are available in the following languages:

  • Pimsleur English for Arabic Speakers
  • Pimsleur English for Chinese Cantonese Speakers
  • Pimsleur English for Chinese Mandarin Speakers
  • Pimsleur English for French Speakers

Pimsleur English Review

Pros

  • The entire course is audio based, all your needs is a CD player or iPod.
  • Each audio lessons are 30 minute in duration. These lessons include common words and phrases used in everyday conversations. The audio quality s very good, making for clear speech, and the 4 CD content is aimed at fluency. It’s portable and fun to use.
  • Pimsleur courses are based on an “input/output” system where the student and teacher interact with each other. Active thinking is promoted by making the student anticipate answers. Thinking and recalling short term memory is what enhances your learning.
  • Applies four principles of learning
    1. The first principle the course applies is the “Graduated Interval Recall”. Here, new information is introduced at specific intervals, thus ensuring you learn thoroughly and effectively.
    2. The second principle is “Anticipation”, where the words learned are tested in different conversation scenarios and the student engages in meaningful interaction which enables better learning.
    3. The third principle is “Organic learning”. This means that nature has wired your brain to absorb and learn more though verbal interaction, so listening is more important than reading and writing. This is what the Pimsleur Approach does- it makes you listen.
    4. The fourth principle is “Core Vocabulary”, wherein the emphasis is on teaching the most important words required to learn a language, rather than lots of words.

Cons

  • The vocabulary is not really large. Many reviews complain about the fact that with Pimsleur you will learn only about 500 words of the chosen language. This is true, but learning a lot of words is not the point of the Pimsleur Method, learning to speak is!
  • There are no written transcripts of the audio.
  • If you want to go further in learning a language than simply carrying on a simple conversation you will need to purchase a few books: grammar, verbs and a dictionary to expand your vocabulary and perhaps a workbook to learn to write. A good set of flash cards could also help.
  • The short Pimsleur courses are repeated in the more expanded Comprehensive I courses. The manufacturer uses the smaller courses to entice you to buy the larger, more expensive course. If you are serious about learning a language it is not very economical to buy one of the small courses.

I used Pimsleur to learn my first language other than English and found it perfect for my needs. Some of the vocabulary I don’t use, but it made it easier to pick up new vocabulary in the future. But most important, it was a enjoyable and effective way to beign learning a new language when you have no experience.

Pimsleur Method VS Linguaphone & Rosetta Stone compared these 3 top english learning software, you can learn their advantages and disadvantages to help you decide which one is the best for you.

Rosetta Stone English is a huge language software package that offers a wide variety of tools and experiences for learners, but the content is devoid of cultural explanations and context.

Roseeta Stone English Review

Pros

Cons

  • Comprehensive language course
  • Good interactive emphasis
  • Mac/PC/IOS Surported
  • Both Online Access and Software Packages

Excellent user experience. Polished interface. Highly intuitive. Strong tech support. Mobile component for on-the-go learning.

  • Slow vocabulary learning
  • Sometimes unclear quizzes
  • Sometimes not teaching useful phrases
  • Too much expensive than most of comprehensive Englishlearning course

No cultural information. Language taught out of context. Expensive.

 Ease of Use

Compared to some other English learning software, Rosetta Stone is a breeze to use.  Rosetta Stone’s user interface is an extremely easy one to use and visually pleasing at that, it is easy to navigate with well–labeled buttons.

Effectiveness

Rosetta Stone uses the time proven method of flash cards to teach English. This is effective: however, we feel the program doesn’t build a solid foundation of grammar. That’s why we highly commend Tell me More English or Rocket English.

Supports

Rosetta Stone provides good technical support to their customers. You can use the self–help options like tutorials, a user guide and other forms of online help or contact the customer support team by phone or email.

Rosetta Stone VS. Pimsleur

Which english learning program is better? Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone?

It depends on your style of learning, what you want to accomplish, how much you want to spend,  how much time you have, but mostly your style of learning.  All I can do is describe the two, point out the pros and cons of the Pimsleur courses and Rosetta Stone courses and hope you can decide which one is the best for you.

Pimsleur:

  1. All audio – You can listen and learn while you’re driving, talking a walk, exercising, or doing mindless house work. You still have to focus and listen, but you’re not tied to a book or computer. The focus is on listening and speaking.
  2. Bilingual – English and the new language
  3. Emphasis on conversation – After the very first lesson, you will be able to understand and take part in a simple and practical conversation.
  4. Short Lesson Spans – Each lesson is only 30 minutes long. It’s best to do only one lesson per day.
  5. Pimsleur Method: Based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and “Graduated Interval Recall.”

Rosetta Stone:

  1. Audio and Interactive Element – The Rosetta Stone software teaches the new language in a variety of ways. This is good for both audio learners and visual learners. The student practices listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students need but are not limited to using a computer.
  2. Immersion – Everything is done in the foreign language. There are no explanations in English. Some people love this, others hate it.
  3. Many Short Lessons –  A student can work on short lesson, less than 30 minutes, or study for several hours.
  4. Rosetta Stone Language Recognition Software – helps student work and improve pronunciation.

Final Words

Rosetta Stone language learning software isn’t perfect, but it’s the closest you can get to having the language speakers of a different country in your computer, ready and waiting whenever you’re interested in hearing from them. Knowing about the downsides of this language software can help you prepare: A basic grammar book, for example, and a pocket dictionary are useful companions that may be rarely used, but their presence still appreciated.

Once you’ve added a few basic tools like those mentioned above to your quiver of language learning possibilities, Rosetta Stone is indeed a valuable language learning tool.

In my opinions, pimsleur is perfect for conversational english learning and if you need a comprehensive english learning course, tell me more english will be a better choice than rosetta stone.

Transparent Japanese Review

Pros

Cons

  • Easy to learn Japanese vocabulary with the Byki Japanese flash card system. It is the program’s strongest feature and is great beginner Japanese tool.
  • A step-by-step comprehensive course, great learning process
  • Voice-recognition feature, including the graphs and scoring is good quality and helps to teach you Japanese pronunciation quickly.
  • More competitive price than Tell me More Japanese or Rosetta Stone Japanese

  • The course is a compilation of different programs by the Transparent Language and lacks an overall integration of these tools.
  • Not suitable for more advanced Japanese learners. Another program purchase might be necessary, Rocket Japanese / Pimsleur Japanese
  • Uer Interface design is not so good
  • Only for Windows, Macintoch is not supported

Ease of Use

At first glance it seems simple and easy to navigate; the tabs are clearly marked and it looks clean and not congested. The only problem is the fact that you are using two different programs and must figure out what each one can and can’t do before you can really get into learning. However, once you have spent a little time playing around with both programs you will easily find out which does which and things move along quite smoothly.

Effectiveness

Transparent Japanese is one of the only products on the market today that offers users a true one-stop solution for learning a new language in a variety of different ways. While other language-learning programs take consumers through a set pattern of tutorials that bring them nowhere near true fluency, Transparent breaks this mold by offering numerous ways to practice and master speaking, hearing, and writing Japanese. From touching up on pronunciation to rapidly expanding a usable vocabulary, this software package covers all of the necessary fundamentals for today’s active student.

While Transparent starts with the familiar flash cards that students would find in other software solutions, there are no set boundaries or limitations when using this software.

If a user has already build up a core vocabulary from other studies, then the program recognizes this and advances the learning appropriately. Likewise, when users need additional review time for certain words or phrases, they are not locked into repeating the entire tutorial block in order to master only a few items. The comprehensive knowledge base in Transparent Japanese Complete Edition ensures that each study period is used for maximum effectiveness.

The Transparent software can sometimes feel a bit misleading because of its multi-tiered approach to learning Japanese; it would be easy for a student to question whether or not they were actually building their vocabulary after using the flash cards or playing a few games. Once they are asked to apply their newfound knowledge by deciphering short phrases and sentences, however, it becomes clear that this software does an excellent job of delivering tutorials in a fashion that stimulates learning without the boring repetition found in other teaching methods.

Overall, Transparent Japanese Complete Edition does a solid job of allowing students the freedom to learn a second language on their own terms. Although becoming comfortable with the array of learning options may take some time at first, the average student will find that each of the included tools are simple yet effective for learning Japanese. There is also video support available within each program for instant tutorials as well, so few consumers will have a problem deciphering the true learning effectiveness found in Transparent.

The plethora of learning options found within Transparent Japanese Complete Edition is certainly this software title’s calling card; few other titles can match it in overall effectiveness because of this flexibility. Since there is no definitive teaching method on Earth that works for every consumer 100% of the time, Transparent does a very nice job of giving consumers enough viable options to overcome these differences.

Supports

Transparent Language offers support in the program by viewing tutorials or accessing the help guide. You can also get more help through email or phone support for the more technical problems you may run into. Throughout the program you will find helpful pop-up windows to help explain what you can and can’t do with each feature (these can also be turned off at any time).

Finally, if you want to study basic Japanese in a fun manner, this effective program will be a perfect option for you. Transparent  Japanese is a great vocabulary and grammar learning software program for beginners with many beneficial features.

This is a truly interesting audio-only course on the foreign language learning market today. You will learn German through a series of CDs, without games, videos or interactive experiences via a computer, and become part of a virtual class of three students. Your fellow students speak through the program along with the tutor, giving you a potentially fuller sense of genuine immersion than those programs which are essentially glorified point-and-click flashcard games.

German with Michel Thomas Audio CD

The program consists of audio CDs – ten in a usual bundle – and a full transcript booklet.

The audio CDs are of an excellent quality, and for most packages, you’ll find that they come in a handy little black case. Not that you’ll be wanting to use these outside much, as they do require a bit more feedback than usual from the actual student, but the neatness of it is pretty appealing.

The transcript booklet is the full course, which makes it incredibly easy to follow exactly what everyone is saying, not just the tutor. Still, there are no pen and paper exercises to complete, which might be exactly what you are looking for in a course, or it might be a little too alien from however you’ve previously learned in the past.

Final Words

Michel Thomas course is easy to use, all you need is a cd player. You can listen to the lessons anywhere, however, Michel prefers that you give all your concentration to the lesson so driving a car or other activities are discouraged.

The Michel Thomas Method is primarily concerned with teaching conversational skills. His approach to teaching is excellent and you leave the course with a sense of confidence that you can speak to people in German.

If you want to learn comprehensive German course step by step and with great learning process, you might be better to check out Fluenz German or Tell Me More German.
